Matias Maccelli’s early strike wasn't enough as Ottawa overcame two disallowed goals to edge past Semyon Varlamov in a tight defensive battle decided by a shootout.

Long Island native Shane Pinto scored the deciding goal in a shootout as the Ottawa Senators defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 on Thursday night. Matias Maccelli opened the scoring for New York late in the first period, but Ridley Greig tied the game for Ottawa during the second period. Goaltender Linus Ullmark stopped 20 shots to earn the victory and improve to 6-0-0 on the season.
Semyon Varlamov made 18 saves for the Islanders, who struggled on special teams alongside Ottawa, with both clubs combining to go 0-for-7 on power-play opportunities. The Senators also had two apparent goals waved off earlier in the game due to a review and an offside call before Pinto secured the win in the skills competition.
