Since the NBA's inception in the 1940s, many teams have played in leagues that no longer exist. They either moved to a new location and changed their name, ceased to exist, or were disbanded.

Ten NBA franchises have retained their original team names throughout their entire history in the league. The list highlights historic teams ranging from founding franchises like the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks in 1946 to later expansion clubs including the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, and Miami Heat.
Several of these enduring franchises have achieved sustained championship success, with the Celtics holding 18 titles and the Bulls securing six behind Michael Jordan. Others, like the Suns, remain among the oldest franchises in the NBA that have never won a league championship.
