New UCLA starting quarterback Ty Dieffenbach learned how to play quarterback while coping with his mother's breast cancer battle, one of many obstacles he's overcome.

Ty Dieffenbach is preparing to make his first Football Bowl Subdivision start for UCLA against Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl. Dieffenbach took over quarterback duties after starter Nico Iamaleava was sidelined indefinitely with an injury sustained during a victory against Oregon at Autzen Stadium.
Dieffenbach converted from wide receiver to quarterback in high school before stints at Pittsburgh and Cal Poly. Despite facing limited playing time, injuries, and multiple transfers, he joined head coach Chesney's UCLA team without guarantees and earned the starting role.
