Scottie Scheffler fired a 10-under 60 in the second round of the Travelers Championship, narrowly missing a 59 after a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. His performance places him at 16-under par, currently leading the field by two shots over Viktor Hovland as afternoon play continues.
Scheffler’s stellar round at TPC River Highlands demonstrated strong ball-striking, building on his previous 59 from the 2020 Northern Trust. The soft course conditions facilitated low scoring, a factor Scheffler capitalized on. He nearly became the second player on the PGA Tour, alongside Jim Furyk, to record multiple sub-60 rounds. Furyk holds the course record here with a 58 in 2016.
Scheffler acknowledged the favorable conditions that allowed for aggressive play. “Going out yesterday [Thursday] in the afternoon, when the greens get firm out here and the wind starts to blow, it can get tricky pretty quickly,” he stated. The morning offered a clear advantage. “Going out this morning, you definitely had a feeling the conditions were going to be easier, so you need to go out there and try and take advantage of it.” His execution was key, maintaining focus on his game over the potential score.
Scheffler’s 16-under total provides a strong position heading into the weekend. His recent form includes a tie for fourth at the US Open and a win at The American Express earlier this year. He maintains a pragmatic view on record scores. “At the end of the day, I was very focused on just my execution out there. Who knows what the lead is going to be after today. I’ve put myself in position now this week. Go home, get some rest, and get ready for tomorrow.” Regarding the missed 59, Scheffler noted: “It was like, it would be cool to shoot 59, but somebody has already shot 58 here, so it’s not even the course record,” underscoring his focus on winning the tournament. Scheffler, a past Travelers champion from two years ago, aims to convert this strong start into another title.
