Former Republic of Ireland international James McClean reflected on his career, upbringing in Derry, and his decision not to wear the remembrance poppy. Promoting his autobiography, The Walls, McClean explained that growing up in Creggan following Bloody Sunday shaped his immovable stance against wearing the symbol. His refusal, which began at Sunderland in 2012, led to severe public backlash, booing, and death threats throughout his subsequent spells at Wigan, West Bromwich Albion, and Stoke City.
McClean also discussed his current fallout with Derry City, where he has not played since July following an internal dispute involving his hip condition. With his football future uncertain, the 37-year-old revealed he has been in discussions with Misfits Boxing regarding potential fights once his contract with Derry City concludes.
