Special teams failures erased an early lead as Cutter Gauthier’s transition to center provided a rare silver lining in a frustrating defeat at home.

The Anaheim Ducks suffered a 4-2 defeat against the Boston Bruins at Honda Center on Friday night before embarking on a four-game road trip. Despite controlling 5v5 play through the first two periods, Anaheim struggled heavily on special teams, failing to convert on all five power-play chances and surrendering three goals on four penalty kills. Goaltender Lukas Dostal made 18 saves on 22 shots for Anaheim, while Boston's Michael DiPietro stopped 25 of 27.
Playing without injured captain Mikael Granlund and center Ryan Poehling, head coach Joel Quenneville shifted Cutter Gauthier to second-line center and placed rookie Nikita Klepov on the top line. The Hockey News highlighted positive takeaways from Gauthier's defensive coverage and transition play at center, as well as Klepov's chemistry alongside Leo Carlsson and Alex Killorn, despite the overall loss.
