Newcastle January transfer window: Newcastle must sell to spend in January as UEFA settles and tightens the purse strings
Key Things to Know
  • Newcastle United must sell players before making signings in January due to a restrictive three-year UEFA financial settlement.
  • The agreement limits Newcastle to spending only half of the additional income generated from winter player sales.
  • Goalkeeper Nick Pope and midfielder Joe Willock could be sold permanently to help generate transfer funds.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Newcastle United must sell players in the January transfer window before they can fund new signings following a recent financial settlement with UEFA. Under the three-year agreement, the club accepted a fine and must strictly limit its deficit, permitting head coach Matthias Jaissle to spend only half of any additional income generated from winter sales.

To create budget space, Newcastle could sanction permanent sales for goalkeeper Nick Pope and midfielder Joe Willock, with the latter drawing interest from Besiktas. The club had previously spent £275m during the summer window, but the board is not expected to make drastic squad changes mid-season without preceding departures.
