England’s World Cup campaign is off to a poor start, and the same old issues are clear to see once again after defeat to Tonga.

Matthew Shaw argues that England's new playing style failed to prevent familiar attacking shortcomings in a 30-12 defeat against Tonga. Despite showing promise through offloads and edge play, England struggled close to Tonga's try line, producing scrappy execution and disorganized last-tackle plays. Shaw highlights that head coach Brian McDermott retained the same spine from the previous year, believing tactical style rather than player personnel needed adjustment.
Shaw criticizes the decision to exclude playmaker Jake Connor, who recorded 43 assists during the season, while England's attack stalled. Defensively, England conceded 30 points, including three tries from kicks. Shaw concludes that while qualification remains mathematically possible, England face a steep task requiring heavy victories.
