Shane van Gisbergen could become a sought-after free agent ahead of the 2028 NASCAR Cup Series season, according to comments from The Athletic's Jordan Bianchi. Bianchi reported that larger rival teams are closely monitoring the Trackhouse Racing driver, believing their equipment could elevate his road-course strengths and developing oval performance to championship contention once his contract approaches its conclusion after 2027.
Trackhouse Racing signed Van Gisbergen to a multi-year extension in August 2025 that keeps him through at least 2027. After winning in his Cup Series debut at Chicago in 2023, he earned five Cup victories in 2025. With other major seats already being determined years in advance, Van Gisbergen's continued improvement on oval tracks is expected to make him a prime target across the garage.
