Elliotte Friedman says the Rangers could play a surprising role in a potential Connor Hellebuyck trade — just not the one you’d expect.

According to Elliotte Friedman on Saturday Headlines, the New York Rangers could indirectly catalyze a trade for Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Although the Rangers need goaltending help with Igor Shesterkin out for the season, they are not interested in acquiring Hellebuyck or absorbing his $8.5 million salary. Instead, New York is reportedly seeking a more cost-effective alternative, which could unlock the broader market.
Friedman suggests the Rangers could pursue a goalie trade with interested suitors such as the Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, or Buffalo Sabres. For example, Buffalo's Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen could potentially accept a trade to New York, allowing the Sabres to redirect returned assets to Winnipeg for Hellebuyck, whose suspension is set to end Friday.
