Middlesbrough defender Ashley Phillips has opened up about his physical development, recalling that youth coaches nicknamed him "Bambi on Ice" following a major growth spurt around age 13. The 21-year-old explained that he began growing into his body and finding his balance as a ball-playing center-back through gym work during his under-16 and under-18 stages at Blackburn Rovers.
Phillips joined Middlesbrough from Tottenham in the summer for an initial £7m fee that could rise to £20m. Currently away on international duty with England Under-21s, Phillips highlighted Middlesbrough's ambition to secure promotion to the Premier League while also targeting a future senior England call-up under manager Thomas Tuchel.
