Peter Dobing broke Stoke City's transfer record when he signed and it proved to be one of the best deals the club has ever done…

Peter Smith reflects on the career of Peter Dobing, who rose from a multi-sport youth prospect to become a legendary Stoke City captain. Dobing broke through at Blackburn Rovers in 1956 at age 17, scored prolifically alongside Roy Vernon, and reached the 1960 FA Cup final. After a spell at Manchester City as Denis Law's replacement, Dobing signed with Tony Waddington's Stoke City in 1963 for a then-club-record fee of £38,000.
Dobing spent a decade at the Victoria Ground, cementing his superstar status by captaining Stoke City to the 1972 League Cup trophy at Wembley. Off the pitch, he was known for his passions of angling, cricket, and introducing teammates to pipe-smoking.
