The Story in 60 Seconds

Stoke City and other EFL clubs could receive a major financial boost after Premier League clubs approved a proposed 10-year funding agreement. The landmark deal, presented to the 72 EFL clubs in September, would more than double existing solidarity payments by adding £163 million per year by the 2028/29 season. The package also features an immediate £81 million injection for the current season, though it still requires formal approval from the EFL.

The proposed agreement introduces cost-control measures, a £20 million lifeboat fund, reduced parachute payments, and single-leg Carabao Cup semi-finals. It follows a 245-page Independent Football Regulator report warning that English football faces financial disaster, revealing that nearly two-thirds of EFL and National League clubs are technically insolvent and 94 percent of the top 116 clubs operate at a loss.
