Six years ago on September 23, 2020, Wrexham AFC supporters learned that actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds were the prospective investors seeking to take over the club. The announcement came after 1,223 members of the Wrexham Supporters Trust voted with a 97.5% majority to authorize exploratory discussions with the duo.

Following a presentation promising an initial £2 million investment, members overwhelmingly approved the takeover in November 2020 with 98.6% voting in favor, leading to completion in February 2021. Under manager Phil Parkinson, Wrexham went on to earn consecutive promotions from the National League up to the Championship.
