Conor Chaplin has joined Leicester City on a free transfer from Ipswich Town to drive the club’s immediate promotion push from League One. The 29-year-old forward arrives to bolster new manager Russell Martin’s squad following Leicester’s relegation from the Championship.
The versatile attacker joined Leicester’s pre-season camp in Spain, immediately adapting to Martin’s demanding tactical meetings. Chaplin described his early integration at the club, stating: “I’ve got a warm feeling from everyone at the football club, which has been nice, then it’s been full-on in terms of learning, meetings and understanding how the manager wants us to play, what’s required from myself and what’s required from other players. It’s been really good.”
Martin utilized Chaplin as an advanced number eight during warm-up matches against Cadiz and Malaga. As one of the most senior figures in a youthful dressing room, Chaplin places high value on team unity. He explained: “I really enjoy being together as a team, I love that comradery side of it, so to have meaningful relationships with people, success helps with that, also when you have disappointments as well, highs and lows make you closer, it’s like any relationship.”
Leicester enter the campaign as promotion favorites, yet Chaplin remains grounded about the challenge ahead in League One. Focus remains entirely on collective standards rather than personal accolades. Outlining the squad’s ambition, Chaplin insisted: “We’re in League One because we should be, but we’ve got aspirations to not be here for very long and there’s certain behaviours you’ve got live by every day to make sure that we’re in the league above at the end of the season and that’s more important than any individual accolade or stats.”
Refusing to promise individual stat targets, Chaplin guarantees work ethic and opportunistic final-third play. On what supporters can expect, he added: “Outside of that, opinions are opinions, I’ll leave that for the terraces and yourself to have their expert opinions. But I’m a forward-thinking player, a link between midfield and attack. I like to arrive in the box and have big moments in the penalty area.”
With pre-season preparations accelerating, Leicester rely heavily on Chaplin’s proven track record to guide their rebuild. His work ethic could decide Leicester’s immediate path back up the football league ladder.
