Former Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has completed a surprise move to Burnley on a contract until 2027. The 39-year-old free agent joins a Claret side sitting bottom of the Championship after losing 2-1 against Bristol City on Saturday.
Nicky Hayen’s side is in crisis. Burnley have managed just two points from their opening five league matches following relegation from the Premier League. Selling top scorer Zian Flemming to Ipswich Town for £17m left a massive hole in attack. Vardy offers immediate goalscoring instinct and frontline leadership for a struggling team. The former England forward spent last season in Serie A, scoring seven goals in 29 games for Cremonese. While he could not save the Italian club from relegation, his instinct inside the box remains sharp.
Speaking after his move to Turf Moor, Vardy said: “I’m really happy to now be here at Burnley FC. This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town. I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.”
Pressure is mounting on Hayen to stop the rot immediately. Burnley manager Nicky Hayen added: “We are delighted to welcome Jamie to Burnley FC. His experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad, and we believe he can make a significant impact on our campaign. Jamie has a proven track record, and we are looking forward to seeing him in a Claret shirt.”
Vardy’s legendary 13-year spell at Leicester ended in 2025 after 200 goals in 500 matches. He trained at Leicester’s Seagrave ground this summer to stay fit, but dismissed rumours of returning to the Foxes following their relegation to League One. Instead, Burnley offer him a fresh second-tier challenge. He could make his debut on Tuesday away at Wrexham, before fixtures against Swansea and Derby. Burnley need wins fast.
