Leicester City are closing in on a £2.1m deal for 19-year-old FC Inter Turku centre-back Ilari Kangasniemi. The 6ft 6in defender undergoes a medical on Monday to plug Russell Martin’s depleted defense ahead of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Ipswich Town.
The Foxes needed immediate defensive reinforcements. With Ben Nelson sidelined by an ACL injury and Jannik Vestergaard departed, Martin’s options at the back were dangerously thin. Wout Faes remains out of action during transfer talks, while Caleb Okoli and Harry Souttar are also facing uncertain futures. City urgently needed physical stature and calm distribution. Kangasniemi fits that mandate completely.
Standing 6ft 6in, the Finnish giant has already put together an impressive resume. After developing at hometown club SJK Seinajoki, he earned a move to Inter Milan, featuring twice in the UEFA Youth League in 2024. He returned home last summer, racking up 32 appearances and four goals for Inter Turku, while helping them secure the LiigaCup in March.
This season, the teenager has been outstanding in Finland. He completed 89.6 per cent of his passes and recorded 1,297 touches in 14 league starts, ranking him in the top 12 per cent of the Veikkausliiga. He also anchored Inter Turku’s defense through European qualifying rounds against FK Sarajevo, Basaksehir, and FC Vaduz, holding FC Copenhagen to a 0-0 draw in last week’s Conference League play-off first leg.
FC Inter Turku rejected a £1.2m bid in July, but Leicester’s landmark €2.5m (£2.1m) agreement smashes the Finnish top-flight transfer record previously held by Teemu Pukki’s 2011 move to Schalke. Fans checking transfer feeds alongside standard site footers displaying “Do Not Sell or Share my Data” received sudden confirmation as the teenager prepared to fly to England.
The stakes could not be higher for Martin’s depleted backline. Leicester face a frantic schedule starting with Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash at Ipswich Town. If the medical goes according to plan on Monday, Kangasniemi will immediately bolster a squad striving for defensive stability.
