Leicester City limped into the Carabao Cup second round with an unconvincing 1-0 victory over League Two Northampton Town at a sparse King Power Stadium. Caleb Okoli’s early header secured the result, but Russell Martin’s possession-heavy system delivered a sluggish, error-strewn performance.
Okoli’s 15th-minute header from a Luke Thomas corner gave the Foxes an early advantage, yet the home side produced very little quality across a lifeless first half. Russell Martin’s commitment to build-up play yielded 77 per cent possession and 812 completed passes to Northampton’s 230, but the performance lacked speed and incision. Stephy Mavididi was the worst culprit during a frustrating afternoon, squandering a clear one-on-one opportunity by allowing a recovering Cobblers defender to make a last-ditch tackle. Liam Cullen thought he had doubled the lead on 75 minutes with a fine top-corner strike, only for a mysteriously delayed offside flag to rule it out. Late mistakes while trying to play out from the back nearly gifted the visitors an undeserved equalizer.
Pre-season injury to Conor Chaplin forced Martin’s hand, giving starts to academy prospects Jayden Joseph, Will Alves, and Sammy Braybrooke. Joseph was the standout performer among the trio, operating assuredly in an inverted full-back role that echoed former City defender James Justin. Alves and Braybrooke offered occasional flashes, but neither controlled the tempo. The rhythm of the match instantly improved mid-way through the second half when fresh arrivals Tom Watson and Wes Burns replaced Alves and Mavididi. Both newcomers added immediate drive and are now pushed to start the league opener at Meadow Lane next weekend.
The bigger systemic headache remains upfront. Deploying Bobby DeCordova-Reid through the middle clearly demonstrated that he is not a central striker. The expected arrival of Bosnian forward Admir Bristrić cannot come soon enough, though Martin must find solutions quickly if Leicester are to turn tedious passing into genuine goal threat.
