Key Things to Know
  • Gus Poyet revealed past managerial talks with Sheffield Wednesday broke down due to unrealistic expectations.
  • Former owner Dejphon Chansiri targeted a play-off push despite the club sitting in the relegation zone.

The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Sunderland manager Gus Poyet revealed he held managerial talks with former Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri following the sacking of Tony Pulis in 2020. Poyet explained that negotiations collapsed because the club's targets were unrealistic, with the ownership targeting a run to the Championship play-offs despite the team sitting second-bottom with 21 matches remaining.

Poyet viewed the role as a relegation battle to reach mid-table rather than a promotion push, which led to both parties ending discussions. Sheffield Wednesday subsequently hired Darren Moore in 2021, who later achieved promotion back to the Championship with the club in 2023.
