Ex-Liverpool owner George Gillett dies aged 87 after battle with Alzheimer’s

Former Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has died at the age of 87 following a battle with Alzheimer's disease. The American businessman acquired Liverpool FC alongside Tom Hicks in March 2007 for £174 million, holding ownership of the Premier League club until a contentious sale to New England Sports Ventures in October 2010.

Gillett's tenure at Liverpool was marked by supporter protests and tensions with manager Rafael Benitez before selling the club for approximately £300 million. Outside of English soccer, Gillett owned the NHL's Montreal Canadiens from 2001 to 2009 and held ownership stakes in the Miami Dolphins and the Harlem Globetrotters.
