Chelsea failed in an attempt to sign Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio during the summer transfer window, according to Spanish publication MARCA. Chelsea reportedly made an approach after learning Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho was open to his departure, but the 23-year-old rejected interest from both Chelsea and Liverpool to remain with his boyhood club.
Chelsea eventually completed a permanent deal for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix for €60.7 million. Asencio, who has yet to feature this season, could make his first appearance alongside Antonio Rudiger against Villarreal on October 10 due to defensive absences.
