The Story in 60 Seconds

AEK Athens features a reference to Real Madrid in its official club anthem, which originated from a 3–3 friendly draw on May 12, 1965. During that match in Nea Filadelfeia, AEK forward Mimis Papaioannou impressed Ferenc Puskas, leading Real Madrid to make a transfer offer that AEK ultimately rejected. Papaioannou, who later provided the vocals for the anthem, was central to the inspiration behind the lyrics.

The anthem includes a lyric translating to "And your name became the terror of Real." Written by Christos Kolokotronis with music by Stelios Kazantzidis, the song was composed during a 1965 tour of Germany and officially adopted in 1971, well before AEK's famous European clashes with Madrid in 1985 and 2002.
