Kylian Mbappe says his mum was a "big fan" of Jurgen Klopp and wanted her son to move to Merseyside.

Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he was close to joining Liverpool in 2016 while playing for Monaco at age 18. Speaking to the Athletic, the Real Madrid striker explained that his mother strongly favored a move to Merseyside and was a big fan of then-manager Jurgen Klopp. However, Mbappe declined the move because he preferred to establish himself in France by signing for his hometown club, Paris Saint-Germain.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed the club made extensive efforts to sign Mbappe, including hosting the family on a private jet to discuss a transfer. Mbappe ultimately moved to PSG on an initial loan with an option to buy for 180 million euros, spending seven years in Paris before moving to Real Madrid in 2024.
