The death of Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel, violently struck by the opposing goalkeeper in the middle of a match…

The fatal on-pitch collision involving Spanish footballer Jesus de Miguel has recalled the infamous 1982 World Cup clash between Patrick Battiston and Harald Schumacher. De Miguel, a Tenerife forward, died after a violent collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division match.
Manu Tournoux highlights the parallels to the 1982 semi-final, where Schumacher struck Battiston unconscious, resulting in broken teeth, head trauma, and a fractured cervical vertebra. Schumacher later expressed regret for his post-collision conduct, acknowledging fears the incident was even more severe.
