Manchester City is facing renewed scrutiny after reports revealed that the UK tax authority, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), launched an investigation into the club's accounts in 2018. Following the "Football Leaks" revelations, the tax authority examined whether the club utilized complex arrangements to lower its tax obligations.
According to the Financial Times, the inquiry is separate from the Premier League's investigation and does not involve suspicions of deliberate fraud. Manchester City denied any wrongdoing through its lawyers, asserting that its commercial agreements are sound, though the investigation reportedly remains officially unclosed.
