Lionel Messi is on the verge of making MLS history by becoming the first player to win consecutive Golden Boots since the format changed in 2005. The Argentine forward scored his 26th goal of the campaign in Inter Miami's 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution, moving four goals clear at the top of the league's scoring charts with one regular-season match remaining.
Messi currently leads FC Dallas forward Petar Musa and Vancouver Whitecaps striker Brian White ahead of the season finale against Charlotte FC. Inter Miami manager Kily Gonzalez praised the 39-year-old superstar, who has already helped his team clinch an MLS Cup Playoff spot and could potentially win a third consecutive MLS MVP award.
