The Belgian took over from Per Mertesacker in the summer…
Arsenal's new academy director, Pascal De Maesschalck, has admitted he was surprised to be appointed to the position after arriving in the summer. The Belgian took over the Gunners' youth setup from Per Mertesacker, who spent eight years in the role, following De Maesschalck's departure from Strasbourg.
Speaking to Sporza, De Maesschalck revealed he initially treated the interview merely as a valuable learning experience. He also highlighted positive discussions with first-team manager Mikel Arteta, who expressed strong support for developing youth prospects and integrating academy talents into the senior squad.
