Former Premier League footballers Jimmy Bullard and Peter Odemwingie have been eliminated from the qualifying process for The 154th Open. Both players failed to secure the required finishes at their respective Regional Qualifying events on Monday to advance to the next stage.
Competing amongst a field of over 2,000 golfers across 16 venues, the path to Final Qualifying proved too demanding. At Rochester & Cobham Park, Bullard carded a one-over-par 72, a respectable score but insufficient to place inside the top eight required for progression. His round left him outside the top 15 on the leaderboard. Odemwingie, who has since qualified as a PGA professional, found the challenge at Enville significantly tougher, finishing with a 12-over 84.
The one-day, 18-hole tournaments demonstrated the fine margins in elite golf. Other notable personalities also fell short, including YouTubers Peter Finch, who shot a two-over 72 at Lindrick, and Rick Shiels, who ended with a four-over 76 at Caldy.
There was success for fellow content creator George Bryan, who secured his place in the next stage with a three-under 68 at Hesketh. The successful qualifiers from all venues will now advance to Final Qualifying on June 30, a 36-hole event where a small number of spots for The Open will be decided. The championship itself will be held at Royal Birkdale from July 16-19, where Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion.
