The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that he "failed miserably" during his time at the club because he could not manage the dressing room's strong egos and "prima donnas." Speaking at the Cardiology Gaia Meeting, the 48-year-old explained that he wrongly attempted to apply the same strict, highly disciplinarian leadership style he had used at Porto, treating every player equally instead of adapting to different personalities and statuses.

Chelsea paid a record £13.3 million compensation fee to hire Villas-Boas in 2011, but he was dismissed in March 2012 following disputes with senior squad members. After later managing Tottenham, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Shanghai SIPG, and Marseille, Villas-Boas stepped away from coaching and was elected president of Porto in 2024.
