The Story in 60 Seconds

Pundit Jamie Carragher argues that Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso must sign an elite central defender to anchor the team's backline. Speaking on The Overlap's Fan Debate, Carragher described Chelsea's current defensive unit as looking very average. Despite the club spending £51 million on Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, Carragher believes the French defender has not raised the overall ceiling of the defense in a back-four system.

While Carragher praised the development of right-back Josh Acheampong and the signing of goalkeeper Emi Martinez, he insisted Alonso still lacks a commanding figure to hold the defense together. Alonso, speaking in an earlier interview with Carragher, acknowledged that the club's ambition is to win the Premier League and return to the Champions League, though he emphasized that achieving this long-term process will take time.
