Xabi Alonso has leapt to the defence of one of his young Chelsea stars ahead of Wednesday night's clash against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that goalkeeper Mike Penders will start against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday. Alonso defended the Belgian shot-stopper following a costly mistake in Chelsea's home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, where Penders punched a corner into his own net.
Alonso and defender Maxence Lacroix both expressed full support for Penders, emphasizing that mistakes are part of football. Chelsea will travel to Anfield looking to bounce back, carrying an unbeaten run across their last three meetings with the Reds.
