Xabi Alonso’s clear transfer wish was granted – but Chelsea star now finds himself in wilderness

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso stated in July that he wanted four or five central defenders for the season, a wish granted following the summer transfer window. However, 21-year-old Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino has found himself sidelined from first-team plans despite being fit and available. Alonso has instead relied on Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix, Josh Acheampong, and Wesley Fofana in his back three.

Chelsea originally signed Anselmino from Boca Juniors in 2024 for £15 million on a seven-year contract running through 2031. After prior loan spells at Boca Juniors, Borussia Dortmund, and Strasbourg, an injury in pre-season prevented a summer departure, leaving him at Chelsea until at least January without being featured in the club squad photo.
