Max Meyer was once compared to Lionel Messi and Xabi Alonso, but aged 31 he plays in the fourth division in Germany.

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Max Meyer, once dubbed the next Xabi Alonso, is now playing in the German fourth division. Crystal Palace originally signed the German playmaker on a free transfer from FC Schalke in August 2018 amid high expectations. However, Meyer struggled for regular impact under manager Roy Hodgson, contributing only one goal in his first season before eventually departing the Premier League club by mutual consent midway through the 2020-21 campaign.
Following his departure from Selhurst Park, Meyer had spells with FC Koln, Fenerbahce, Midtjylland, FC Luzern, and APOEL. Despite a successful stint in Switzerland with Luzern, the midfielder returned to Germany to join Rot-Weiss Oberhausen in the Regionalliga West, the country's fourth tier.
