  • Everton's appeal against the compensation ruling is scheduled to be heard in January 2027.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Everton previously raised concerns that Burnley might be unable to repay approximately £35 million if Everton's appeal against a compensation ruling succeeds. Everton was ordered to pay Burnley £26 million in compensation and roughly £9.1 million in pre-award interest following breaches of Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Everton challenged the ruling as fundamentally flawed, with the appeal scheduled to be heard in January 2027.

Everton requested a stay of enforcement or an escrow arrangement, citing Burnley's £62 million in net current liabilities and £142 million in financial debt. The commission rejected Everton's request, determining Burnley would likely be able to repay the funds. If Burnley defaults, the commission stated Everton could recover the amount over time through Premier League Central Funds.
