The Story in 60 Seconds

Irish football analyst Ronan Calvert has backed Everton to pursue a permanent transfer swoop for Waterford striker Tommy Lonergan. Everton scouts reportedly watched the 22-year-old score twice for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s in a 3-1 win over England in Cork, with Brentford, Brighton, Leeds United, and Sunderland also monitoring the forward.

Everton manager David Moyes is dealing with limited attacking depth following summer departures, leaving Thierno Barry as the squad's only recognised striker. Lonergan has scored 16 goals in 32 matches in 2026 for Waterford, and Calvert argues his physical profile makes him ready for a return to English football.
