The Story in 60 Seconds

Joe Gomez emerged as an unlikely hero for Liverpool after scoring in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Anfield. The 29-year-old defender converted his spot-kick past goalkeeper Mike Penders to put Liverpool ahead 6-5. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana subsequently missed his attempt, sealing Liverpool's qualification for the Carabao Cup quarterfinals where they will play Bournemouth.

Gomez captained a rotated side managed by Andoni Iraola in what was only his second start of the season. Operating at right-back, he successfully defended against Chelsea's Morgan Rogers, made a crucial goalbound block, and created an attacking chance for Ronald Araujo before making his decisive contribution in the shootout.
