Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso praised Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz ahead of their upcoming Carabao Cup fourth-round meeting at Anfield. Alonso, who previously managed Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen, stated that working with the German playmaker was one of the main reasons for his current career success and confirmed he continues to follow the £116 million player's progress at Liverpool.
Wirtz is expected to shake off an ankle knock to be available for the fixture. Alonso also provided an injury update for Chelsea, confirming striker Joao Pedro will be sidelined for a few weeks after sustaining a thigh injury during training.
