The decision follows political pressure and criticism over his remarks supporting the club's Abu Dhabi owners after Manchester City was found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations between 2009 and 2018.

Burnham stated in an interview that he would release records of his past mayoral work with the club, noting his only significant meeting occurred in 2021. He argued that municipal investment matters must be separated from football governance issues, while opposition politicians have called for full transparency regarding government contacts with the club.
