Manchester City could possibly face relegation to the Championship if charges against them are upheld on appeal

Manchester City could face a revenue loss exceeding £300 million if their appeal against 114 alleged Premier League financial rule breaches fails and results in relegation. The club is appealing after an independent panel ruled they utilized sham sponsorship deals between 2009 and 2018 to artificially inflate revenue by roughly £900 million. City maintain they possess irrefutable evidence of their innocence, with a final appeal verdict potentially arriving by the new year.
Football finance specialist Kieran Maguire warned that relegation would trigger an FFP catastrophe under EFL rules unless a massive squad exodus occurs. Dropping to the Championship would cost City an estimated £315 million across broadcasting, Champions League, and matchday income. This financial hit would create severe difficulties complying with EFL Squad Cost Rules given City's reported 2024/25 wage bill of £408.4 million.
