Fernandes remains United’s relentless talisman. Having lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup while setting a Premier League assist record with 21 setups, his influence reaches beyond tactical output. As he prepares to lead United into another campaign following a dismal 15th-place finish in 2024/25, off-pitch leadership cements his authority. Williams, an academy product who broke through under injury crises to earn 51 appearances, revealed the skipper still reaches out with tickets and messages. Praise for the Portuguese playmaker was simple. Williams said: “That’s why he’s the captain, he’s an unreal guy.”
The contrast between both careers is stark. Williams saw his trajectory collapse following a 74mph car crash in Wilmslow, resulting in a conviction for dangerous driving in March 2025. Sentenced to a 14-month suspended prison term, a three-year driving ban, and 180 hours of community service, his contract expired before a brief stint at Hull City ended abruptly. Now training with League Two side Rotherham, Williams maintains contact with Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire while reflecting on past achievements. He stated: “I’ve only just started to look back and be like, ‘I actually did something.’ I actually played for United 51 times. It’s something to be proud of.”
The climb back requires sheer mental resilience. Motivation stems directly from close family ties. He revealed: “My nan is on at me because she’s got a frame where it’s me playing at 18, 19, 20 and 21. Every time I go and see her, she points at it and says, ‘I want you to be doing that again.’ That’s my motivation.”
Climbing back up the football ladder will be brutal. Williams harbors no illusions about the immediate future as he fights for a contract in the lower leagues, adding: “I know it’s not going to be a quick process, I know I’m not going to be in the Premier League next year. I’m ready to climb the mountain and get back to the top of it.”
