Birmingham City appoint ex-Manchester United chief John Murtough as director of football.

Birmingham City have appointed former Manchester United chief John Murtough as their new director of football. The 55-year-old replaces Craig Gardner, who left St Andrew's in June. Murtough will officially take over the role on Monday following Birmingham's Championship match against Cardiff City, with head coach Chris Davies reporting directly to him.
Murtough's wide remit covers recruitment, performance, data, and academy pathways, alongside collaborating with Hope Powell on the women's team. He previously spent 11 years at Manchester United before leaving in April 2024, and most recently served as director of global development at Serie A club Atalanta.
