Paul Merson has called for transfer rule changes after Real Madrid reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel. The 16-year-old can more easily move to an overseas club as an EU passport holder subject to FIFA approval. While Manchester United offered Gabriel a scholarship earlier this year, he remains registered despite a September cancellation request.
Manchester United are entitled to training compensation expected to be between £100,000 and £300,000, though the club is considering legal action against any European team signing him. Merson argued academies must be protected after investing heavily in developing youth players.
