From experiencing racism growing up in Newcastle to becoming a derby hero and now a member of the executive team, the former striker has been on a remarkable journey“There were times where I feared for my life as a kid…

Former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has reflected on his journey from enduring racism as a child in Newcastle to becoming the club's head of corporate affairs. After seven years working as the club's loans coordinator, Ameobi accepted the executive role in July following a 100-day review led by CEO David Hopkinson. Ameobi aims to use his position to deeply connect the club with the local community and inspire the next generation.
Ameobi explained that his passion for executive leadership originated following major hip surgery in 2006, which caused him to consider his life beyond playing. He subsequently completed the Premier League's player to executive pathways scheme, earned a master's degree in strategic leadership, and continues to serve on the Premier League's Black participants advisory group.
