Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka has been cleared to return to the Switzerland national team for upcoming fixtures against Slovenia and Scotland. Swiss manager Murat Yakin will also have striker Breel Embolo available after both players were previously sidelined amid an investigation into fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates. In an official statement, the Swiss FA confirmed that Xhaka will also retain his role as team captain.
The decision comes after legal proceedings concluded with Xhaka receiving a suspended fine of 150,000 Swiss francs. The midfielder had previously admitted to obtaining the certificate amid personal uncertainty, publicly apologizing for his mistake. The Swiss FA stated that his return was justified given the conclusion of the case and the four international matches he had already missed.
