Key Things to Know

  • Mikel Arteta replaced Ramsdale at Arsenal with David Raya due to stylistic preferences and pressing tactics.
  • Ramsdale joined Southampton for up to £25 million before spending a loan spell at Newcastle United.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Aaron Ramsdale has dropped from being Arsenal's primary goalkeeper to the fourth-choice shot-stopper at Championship side Southampton. After Mikel Arteta replaced him with David Raya at Arsenal, Ramsdale transferred permanently to Southampton in a deal worth up to £25 million. However, the Saints suffered relegation from the Premier League, and a subsequent loan spell at Newcastle United failed to result in a permanent transfer.

Upon his return to Southampton, head coach Tonda Eckert placed Ramsdale behind Daniel Peretz, George Long, and Jamie Jones in the goalkeeping pecking order. Ramsdale reportedly turned down temporary departures during the summer due to family reasons and plans to fight for his place until the January transfer window.
