Why red-hot Celtic gem Callum Osmand cannot play for Wales despite being a youth international
Key Things to Know
  • Callum Osmand is ineligible for Wales due to a 2023 rule change affecting Channel Islands-born players.
  • The 20-year-old Celtic forward can now only represent England internationally, which he confirmed is his goal.
  • Wales manager Craig Bellamy confirmed that Osmand cannot be considered for selection for the national team.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Celtic forward Callum Osmand is no longer eligible to represent Wales at senior level despite playing for their youth teams across two age groups. The 20-year-old was born in Jersey, where previous eligibility regulations allowed Channel Islands natives to freely choose between any of the British home nations. However, a 2023 rule change restricted Channel Islands players to representing England unless they possess specific ancestral ties.

Because Osmand lacks familial links to Wales and his mother was born in England, he can now only represent England internationally, which he confirmed is his goal. Wales manager Craig Bellamy confirmed Osmand cannot be selected despite his admiration for the player. The update follows Osmand's decisive contribution for Celtic on Thursday, scoring and assisting off the bench in a 3-2 victory over Besiktas.
