The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Rangers chairman Sir David Murray claimed he could still be running the club if tax authorities had not targeted the Ibrox outfit. Speaking on the Graeme Souness Tackles podcast, Murray stated that inflated HMRC penalties combined with the collapse of the Bank of Scotland left him with no way out, ultimately leading to his departure in 2011.

Murray sold his controlling stake to Craig Whyte for £1, prior to the club entering liquidation in 2012 over separate tax issues. The former chairman also admitted making decisions driven by vanity under fan pressure, though HMRC previously insisted in 2019 that it did not miscalculate any tax demands.
