Key Things to Know
  • Councils approved €200m in public funding to redevelop Napoli's Stadio Maradona for EURO 2032.
  • The Naples city council committed €50m, joining €150m previously allocated by the Campania regional council.
  • Naples is competing to host tournament matches as Italy and Turkey co-host EURO 2032.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Local councils have approved a total of €200m in funding to redevelop Napoli's Stadio Diego Armando Maradona ahead of the EURO 2032 tournament. The Naples city council, led by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, agreed to contribute €50m in municipal funds. This funding supplements the €150m previously allocated by the regional council of Campania to renovate the historic venue.

The 54,732-capacity stadium requires restoration to meet eligibility standards to host matches for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Italy and Turkey. Because the stadium is municipally owned rather than club-owned, authorities opted for a publicly funded renovation instead of building a new venue.
