Report Malagò could become special commissioner of FIGC to replace himself
Key Things to Know
  • Giovanni Malagò could be appointed FIGC special commissioner to replace himself if his presidential election is voided.
  • CONI is evaluating whether his June victory is null due to his lack of official FIGC membership.
  • Lega Serie A continues to back Malagò and opposes placing the federation under external administration.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Giovanni Malagò could reportedly be appointed as the special commissioner of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to replace himself following election irregularities. The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) commission is set to rule on whether to void his June election victory because he was not an officially registered FIGC member when elected.

CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio has reportedly scheduled a meeting with Malagò to discuss the commissioner role, which would allow him to enact reforms while rules are updated. Lega Serie A continues to back Malagò, warning that an outside commissioner could cause instability and potentially jeopardize Italy's co-hosting duties for EURO 2032.
