Every Serie A club in the UEFA Champions League suffered a defeat in the second round of the group phase, marking a historic low for Italian football. Inter, Como, Roma, and Napoli all lost their respective fixtures, conceding a combined 14 goals while scoring only eight. Mediaset reported that this is the first time in the competition's history that all Italian representatives were defeated on the same matchday.
Italian sides have averaged just 0.5 points across eight combined Champions League matches, lagging far behind the Premier League and La Liga. Como remains the only Italian team to have secured a win in the campaign. The Cult of Calcio argues that Italian outfits are underestimating the importance of avoiding the playoff round and overlooking opponents who appear weaker on paper.
